How To Sign Up For Unemployment Insurance In California

Now you're done crying and you're ready to start doing something. I found this video on the California EDD site very helpful.

Basically, the video talks about what information you need to provide (social security number, job address and whatnot). And in California, you have to call, fax, or use the online form to apply.

It was very helpful getting the details on what to expect when I called, especially since I was nervous. This was my first time undergoing this process. Any other advice fellow unemployees?

If you have any helpful hints to signing up, please share!

Unemployment Announcement

Your unemployment announcement probably went something like this: You may have been asked to "mutually agree" to leave. Or perhaps you were late one too many times and got fired. Maybe you just have had enough and said "I quit!" But however it happened - you are now Unemployed. It feels like a really big word on your very first day of unemployment. It is a rite of passage and welcome.

Here are some things you may be feeling today:
-Sad
-Scared
-Angry
-Bitter
-Upset
-Worried

Fear not! Unemployment can be fun, too. Just think of today as the first day of summer vacation (or winter). Remember when school got out and the months ahead were unfilled gems waiting to happen? I know. That was a long time ago. It's hard to remember back that far. But close your eyes. I know you can do it.

Today, you take back your independence and you celebrate that no company owns your schedule! Not today, oh no.

So feel free to post your feelings on what your first day of unemployment was like. Mine was freedom.
